AI Tutor for Kids: 9 Questions Parents Should Ask Before Choosing One
A good AI tutor for kids should help a child think, not simply produce answers. Before choosing one, parents should check curriculum fit, teaching behaviour, reliability, privacy, age-appropriate safeguards, parent visibility and whether the tool leaves room for teachers, family and independent effort.

1. Is the tutor grounded in the child's curriculum?
A general chatbot may give an answer that is broadly correct but outside the class syllabus, use unfamiliar notation or explain a chapter from an outdated book.
Ask:
- Can the tutor identify the student's board, class, subject, book and chapter?
- Does it link to or name the source it is using?
- Can the child return to the exact textbook context?
For CBSE students, “knows science” is not the same as “understands the current NCERT chapter the child is studying.”
2. Does it teach before it tells?
Try a homework question. Does the tutor immediately reveal the final response, or does it first ask what the child understands?
A learning-oriented tutor should be able to:
- break a problem into smaller steps;
- offer a hint;
- explain why a step works;
- identify a misconception; and
- give a similar question to check understanding.
UNICEF's guidance for parents notes both the value of personalised help and the risk that children may offload too much thinking to AI. Productive struggle—the effort of working through a manageable challenge—is part of learning.
3. What happens when the AI is wrong?
Every generative AI system can produce inaccurate or invented information. The important question is how the product reduces and handles that risk.
Look for:
- answers tied to approved learning material;
- clear uncertainty rather than confident guessing;
- an easy way to report a questionable response;
- encouragement to verify important facts; and
- design that distinguishes a source from an AI explanation.
Teach children a simple habit: pause, check, then use. Check the textbook, teacher notes or another reliable source before accepting a claim.
4. What personal information can a child share?
Children may reveal more than they realise: their full name, school, location, routine, friendships, photos, health concerns or family details.
Before signing up, read the privacy information and ask:
- What data is collected?
- Are chats stored, and for how long?
- Is student data used to train models?
- Can a parent delete the child's data?
- Does the tutor warn children not to share sensitive information?
UNICEF's child-centred AI guidance places safety and protection of children's data among its core requirements. UNESCO also recommends privacy protection and age-appropriate limits for independent use of generative AI.
5. Is the experience appropriate for the child's age?
A smaller font and a cartoon mascot do not automatically make an adult chatbot child-safe.
Age-appropriate design includes vocabulary the child can understand, bounded topics, suitable examples, safe refusal behaviour and a learning goal. Younger children need more co-use and supervision; older students still need clear limits and the ability to question the tool.
CBSE's 2026–27 computational thinking and AI curriculum for middle school explicitly includes digital responsibility, privacy and safe online behaviour. AI literacy should include limits and ethics—not only how to prompt a model.
6. Can parents see meaningful progress without reading every chat?
Healthy oversight is different from constant surveillance. A useful parent view should summarise learning signals such as:
- chapters or activities completed;
- practice attempted;
- concepts that may need support;
- consistency over time; and
- a sensible next step.
Avoid treating time spent in an app as proof of learning. Ten focused minutes that end with a child explaining an idea can be more useful than an hour of passive tapping.
7. Does it build independence over time?
The tutor should gradually need to do less. Look for prompts such as “What would you try first?”, “Explain that in your own words” and “Can you solve a similar example without help?”
A simple family rule is the three-before-me routine:
- Read the relevant textbook section.
- Attempt the question and mark the exact point of confusion.
- Ask the AI for a hint or explanation—not a completed submission.
Afterwards, close the tutor and solve or explain the idea independently.
8. Does it stay a tutor instead of becoming an emotional companion?
An educational tool can be warm and encouraging without pretending to be a best friend, therapist or secret confidant.
UNICEF warns that highly agreeable AI companions can affect expectations about relationships and may displace conversations with trusted people. Parents should be cautious if a system encourages secrecy, dependency or long emotional conversations unrelated to learning.
The boundary should be clear: school questions go to the tutor; personal distress goes to a trusted adult.
9. Does it fit a balanced learning routine?
AI should not crowd out sleep, physical activity, handwritten work, reading, experiments, friends or discussion with teachers and family.
A strong session has a beginning and an end:
- Set one learning goal.
- Use the tutor for explanation or practice.
- Produce something off-screen: a solution, diagram, summary or spoken explanation.
- Stop when the goal is complete.
