Class 9 New NCERT Books 2026-27: What Changed

New book names, the Standard and Advanced levels in Maths and Science, and the third language rule, explained simply for Class 9.

If you are in Class 9 this year, you are the first batch to use the new NCERT books for 2026-27. This guide explains which new NCERT books Class 9 uses, how the new Standard and Advanced levels in Mathematics and Science work, and what the third language rule means for you. Every rule here is stated as CBSE and NCERT have announced it, nothing more.

Which classes get new NCERT books in 2026-27

In 2026-27, new NCERT textbooks are used only in Class 9.

  • Class 9: new books this year.
  • Classes 10 and 11: keep their existing NCERT textbooks in 2026-27. Their new books start in 2027-28.
  • Class 12: no new book has been announced.

So if you have an elder brother or sister in Class 10 or 11, their books have not changed this year. Only the Class 9 shelf is new.

The new Class 9 NCERT book names

Here are the new titles, subject by subject:

SubjectNew NCERT book
MathematicsGanita Manjari Part I and Part II
ScienceExploration
EnglishKaveri
HindiGanga
Social ScienceUnderstanding Society: India and Beyond, Part I

A simple tip: when you search for notes or help, use the new book name along with the chapter name. Notes made for the old books may have different chapter names and order. If a page talks about a book name that is not in the table above, it is not about your new books.

Two levels in Maths and Science: Standard and Advanced

This is the biggest change for Class 9. From 2026-27, Class 9 Mathematics and Science have two levels.

Standard (for everyone)

  • Every student studies the common Standard syllabus.
  • It is examined in an 80-mark, 3-hour school annual exam.

Advanced (optional)

  • An optional Advanced paper of 25 marks, 1 hour long, can be added.
  • You may take none, one or both Advanced papers. For example, you could take Advanced Maths only, Advanced Science only, both, or neither.
  • Advanced marks are not added to your aggregate.

Internal assessment

  • The two levels do not apply to the 20-mark internal assessment.

What this means for you: the Standard syllabus is the base everyone must learn well. The Advanced paper is a choice. Since its marks are not added to the aggregate, you can decide based on your interest in the subject, not on fear of losing marks. If you enjoy Maths or Science and want a challenge, the Advanced paper is there for you. If you would rather spend that energy on building strong basics, skipping it is a fair choice too.

What about Maths Basic and Standard?

You may have heard about Mathematics Basic and Mathematics Standard. Here is how that works now:

  • Students in Class 10 in 2026-27 (Board exam 2027) keep the existing scheme. They can still choose Mathematics Basic (241) or Mathematics Standard (041).
  • The Basic/Standard split ends for the new Class 9 batch.

So for a Class 9 student, the old Basic/Standard choice does not apply. Instead, you have the common Standard syllabus plus the optional Advanced paper described above. Be careful not to mix up the two systems when you talk to seniors.

Three languages from Class 9

From 2026-27, Class 9 students study three languages, and at least two of them must be Indian languages.

  • The third language is assessed only by the school.
  • There is no Board exam in the third language at Class 10.
  • But passing the third language is required to get the Class 10 certificate.

Class 10 students in 2026-27 are not affected. They continue with two languages.

What this means for you: even though there is no Board exam in your third language, it still matters. Treat it as a real subject, attend the school assessments and make sure you pass it.

What has not been announced yet

Some things are still unknown, so do not trust anyone who sounds very sure about them:

  • No new Class 12 book has been announced.
  • The official facts above do not describe the chapter-wise content of the Advanced paper or how it will be set. Your school is the best place to ask about it.

Until more is announced, focus on what you can control: read your new books carefully, chapter by chapter, and build strong basics in the Standard syllabus first.

What to do this week

  1. Check that the books you are using match the new titles in the table above.
  2. Talk to your Maths and Science teachers about whether the Advanced paper suits you.
  3. Find out which third language you are studying and how your school will assess it.
  4. Make a simple weekly plan that gives every subject, including your third language, some time.

You can read every new chapter and practise its questions when you study this chapter with Joy on Learnijoy.
