Perplexity Develops SPACE for AI Agent Sandbox Management

Perplexity has announced the creation of SPACE, an in-house platform designed for sandbox lifecycle management. This platform is now exclusively responsible for serving all production traffic for their AI agent product, Perplexity Computer. The transition to SPACE, from previously relying on external sandbox providers, has yielded substantial operational improvements. Notably, Perplexity reports a five-fold reduction in tail latency, leading to a much faster user experience. Furthermore, SPACE offers considerable cost advantages, being five times cheaper than previous solutions like Vercel, translating into millions of dollars in annual savings. Beyond performance and cost, the platform also enhances security by isolating long-running agent sessions and ensuring that sensitive credentials are never directly stored within the runtime environments.
