CBSE Class 10 Second Board Exam 2027: How Two Exams Work

A plain guide for parents: who must take the first exam, who can take the second, which score counts and what is still to be announced.

The CBSE Class 10 second board exam gives many students another chance, but the rules on who can take it and which marks count are easy to misread. This guide explains the two-exam system for the 2027 Board exams in simple words: the timing, the rules for the second exam, how results work and what CBSE has not announced yet. Each rule is given as CBSE has stated it.

When are the two exams?

CBSE says:

  • The first Class 10 Board exam of 2027 is held during February–March and is mandatory.
  • The second Class 10 exam is in May.

The 2027 date sheet had not been released as of 7 October 2026.

The first exam is for everyone

Every Class 10 student must take the first exam. It is not optional, and it is not a practice round. Both exams cover the full syllabus with the same scheme, so there is no lighter version later in the year.

Also, CBSE notified that there is no change in the question paper design and assessment pattern for 2026-27, and the passing criteria remain the same as in 2025-26.

Who can take the second exam?

Your child's situation after the first examCan they take the second exam?
Passed, and wants to improve scoresYes, in up to 3 subjects from Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages
Placed in CompartmentYes
Missed 3 or more subjects in the first examNo. They are placed in Essential Repeat

Two points to note carefully:

  • The improvement option is limited to up to 3 subjects, and only from Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages.
  • Missing the first exam in 3 or more subjects closes the door to the second exam for that year.

How marks and results work

  • Internal assessment happens once. It is not repeated for the second exam.
  • The better score of the two counts. Taking the second exam cannot lower a result; the better of the two is used.
  • Photocopy, verification and re-evaluation open only after the second exam result, not after the first.
  • Class 11 admission: a student who has not yet qualified gets provisional admission to Class 11, which is confirmed after the second result.

What happened in 2026

This system has already run once. In 2026, the second Class 10 exam ran from 15 to 21 May 2026, and its results came out on 18 July 2026.

This gives you a rough sense of the gap between the second exam and its result. But it is last year's schedule. CBSE has not announced the 2027 dates, so do not treat 2026's dates as fixed for 2027.

What CBSE has not announced yet

  • The 2027 date sheet for the first exam.
  • The exact dates of the second exam in May 2027.

Until these are out, be careful with any dates shared on social media or messaging groups. Check CBSE's own website.

What this means for your family

1. Plan for the first exam as the main exam. It is mandatory and covers the full syllabus. Treat it as your child's real Board exam, not a trial run.

2. See the second exam as a safety net, not a plan. It can help improve up to three subjects, but it covers the full syllabus again, in May, when your child may also be thinking about Class 11. A calm, steady effort before February–March is the better plan.

3. Protect attendance in the first exam. Missing 3 or more subjects means Essential Repeat, with no second exam.

4. Keep internal assessment on track. It happens only once, so school projects and assessments matter.

5. Talk about it calmly. Knowing a second chance exists can help your child feel calmer. Use that to reduce pressure, while keeping the focus on doing well the first time.
